What is AoZ?
Age of Origins (AoZ) is a mobile-first massively multiplayer online (MMO) strategy game developed by Camel Games. The game operates on a free-to-play model with monetization options that can significantly affect player progression. The initial twenty minutes serve as a tutorial; the core experience is a city-building strategy game with PvP warfare elements.
The game is fully playable without spending money, though spending provides advantages in city development speed and military capability. Monetization opportunities exist throughout the game, from account progression features like the Golden Hammer (which enables simultaneous construction of two buildings) to cosmetic and gameplay events such as racing and fishing competitions.
Many players maintain competitive cities with minimal spending, typically investing only in strategic items like the Golden Hammer. However, the game features significant mechanical depth and requires substantial learning. Online resources remain limited, making comprehensive guides essential for optimal progression.
Globes, Nations, and Alliances
Within each globe there are nations, within each nation there are alliances, and each alliance is made up of players. Globes and nations are numbered, starting at one and incrementing for each globe or nation opened up. Each globe has a limited number of nations, but outside of events, nations don’t interact with each other. New players are funneled into new nations, however new nations are not just new players. Sometimes more experiences players want to start anew (since typically the first few months of a new nation are the most exciting) and will bring their knowledge to help new players grow.
Globes
In your day to day playing, you typically won’t look at the globes, or visit other nations in your globe. Why? After city level 8 or 48 hours, you can’t switch nations. The only time globes come into play is during an event called Global Conquest, where you can teleport to a special battleground and battle against other nations. This is an important event, but it’s worthy of a full writeup another time. For now it’s enough to know globes exist.
Nations
Nations represent the primary competitive arena in AoZ. Once a city reaches 48 hours of age or the Main Hall reaches level 8, players are permanently bound to their nation and cannot transfer. New players begin in newly established nations, creating a relatively balanced starting environment. Each nation features identical geography: a square map containing three player cities and a capital location. Nations include built-in chat functionality enabling cross-player communication. Within nations, players often transition from adversarial interactions to cooperative relationships as they recognize mutual interdependencies.
Alliances
Alliances form the core of the player experience in AoZ. When selecting an alliance, choose one that aligns with your gaming approach and objectives, then commit to it rather than spending excessive time evaluating options. Top-tier alliances (typically ranked in the top three) often benefit from mutual defense agreements known as “protection” systems, wherein members of allied alliances cannot attack one another. These political structures operate outside game mechanics.
Alliance membership provides critical strategic benefits. In a game where cities remain vulnerable to attack at all times, alliances function as mutual defense organizations—an attack against one member is treated as an attack against all. Beyond security, alliances unlock cooperative gameplay events that sustain long-term engagement.
Alliances include integrated chat with automatic translation support via Google Translate for multiple languages. While translation quality varies, the system enables real-time communication between players across language barriers. For example, alliance members may simultaneously chat in Arabic, English, Korean, Japanese, German, and Vietnamese, each receiving translations in their selected language.
Your City
Your city functions as your primary base of operations and can be viewed in two modes: a map overview and a detailed interior view. The map displays relative city power through visual scale (larger cities appear more dominant) but provides limited strategic information. The city interior contains numerous buildings; detailed information will be covered in dedicated building guides. Initially, prioritize Main Hall upgrades through guided quests.
The Main Hall determines the maximum level of all other buildings and, consequently, the maximum troop levels available for recruitment. Higher troop levels generally correlate with increased combat effectiveness, though this relationship involves numerous contextual variables addressed in advanced combat guides.
Summary
AoZ is an MMO strategy game requiring active alliance participation for sustained progress. Upon entering a nation, identify established alliances with experienced members—those who have invested significantly in city development provide valuable mentorship and resources. While switching alliances initially is acceptable as you evaluate fit, starting your own alliance is not recommended without substantial experience due to complex management requirements.
Before committing resources to your city, seek mentorship from experienced players or consult comprehensive guides to ensure optimal allocation of both time and spending toward long-term progression goals.
